If you’re not satisfied with a purchase you made with a credit card, dispute it no matter what your dispute terms say.

But of course, they don’t tell you that you have broader rights than what’s in the written disclosures about your account. The problem stems from outdated language in the Federal Reserve’s Truth in Lending regulation. The law says credit card holders may dispute transactions greater than $50 that occurred in the state where the cardholder lives, or within 100 miles of their address. Several banks including Bank of America, Chase, Wells Fargo and Capital One note those exact terms in written materials they provide customers about their credit card accounts. The disclosures say all of those terms must be met before you can file a dispute. But none of those banks really requires those terms to be met. “That’s not the guidelines that we hold our customers to,” Bank of America spokeswoman Betty Reiss told me.
