Today MSN Money featured a hilarious advice column in which Seth, a college student, asked how much he should charge to co-sign for a credit card for his younger friends. I think Seth is an idiot, but I don’t think the basic idea - using your own good credit to help someone with bad credit - is totally without merit.

…Today MSN Money featured a hilarious advice column in which Seth, a college student, asked how much he should charge to co-sign for a credit card for his younger friends. They need someone over 21 to co-sign, he reasoned, and I’m over 21. The columnist basically threw the book at him (the book of how credit scores work), and gave his “sweet business idea” an F for potentially ruining his credit (too many cards), for making him responsible for all the debt he co-signs on, and for being dishonest (since the reason his peers need co-signers is to go behind their parents’ backs).I think Seth is an idiot, but I don’t think the basic idea - using your own good credit to help someone with bad credit - is totally without merit. I have really good credit, and I have some friends that have no credit history, which has made apartment-procurement difficult for them. I have thought about offering to co-apply with a friend so she could get an apartment, but I ultimately decided not to bring it up. I’m not squeamish about…
